Report cards were sent home electronically on Friday. Please let me know if you did not receive yours. Band progress reports, ELL updates, and IEP updates were sent home in students’ Friday folders, if they received them.
Conference reminders were also sent home in last week’s Friday folder. Please let me know as soon as possible if you are unable to make your scheduled time.
If you have not yet returned your permission slip for the South field trip, please do so as soon as possible. Permission slips were sent home with students on March 4.
Students in my math class will have the Chapter 9 test on Wednesday this week. We will be reviewing in class; students are encouraged to review their classwork, IXL strands, and textbook in preparation. Students can also watch these videos to help them review specific lessons from the chapter.
On March 20, librarians from the Arlington Heights Memorial Library will be coming to Dryden to share some new books with 5th grade students. Students are encouraged to bring their library cards to school on the 20th, as they’ll have the opportunity to check out books at this time.
When we return from spring break, we’ll be diving right into the Illinois Assessment of Readiness. This replaces PARCC testing. Students may not wear smartwatches during the testing, so if your student typically wears one, please encourage him or her to leave it at home on testing days. The schedule for 5th grade testing is as follows:
April 2, April 4, April 5- Math Assessment (9:10-11:10)
April 8, April 9- Reading Assessment (1:15-3:00)
If you’re able to schedule absences around these times, that would be great!
Please remember that there will be no school on Thursday, March 21st or Friday, March 22nd for Parent/Teacher Conferences. We look forward to meeting with you all next week for the scheduled conferences. If you cannot make your scheduled time, please let me know as soon as possible. Students are invited to attend the conference as well, so that they can be included in the conversation and share their own thoughts on the trimester. We also understand if you prefer to have an adult-only conversation, and students are not required to attend.
Students with numbers 13-24 have their next reading response letters due Friday, March 22nd. Vlogs for students (1-12) will be due on Friday, March 22nd. The directions, topic choices, and rubric for assessing them can be found here.
There will be no reading logs or vlogs due over the week we are off for spring break.
Here's a fun glimpse of what we did last week. We read the poem "The Weary Blues" by Langston Hughes and identified the sounds that we heard when reading the poem. The students then decided to create a blues band to perform the poem. Take a look at the performance!
